Workshop: Critical Race Today
"Mass incarceration", "Racial Segregation", and "Black Lives Matter" are few of the most globally widespread and loudly resonating expressions in the media today. They signal the crucial importance of race and racism in structuring societies globally. This short course will theoretically and empirically introduce students to Critical Race Studies by examining some of the most evident racial phenomena today, including mass incarceration in the US, racial segregation in Western Europe, and Western knowledge production on Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union. These three topics will be critically examined historically and we will ask students to identify and elaborate on analytical and empirical lines connecting all three phenomena.
